Surprise: GT-R will be sold under Nissan, not Infiniti

Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn today announced that the next generation of Nissan’s GT-R performance car will be available in North America and badged as a Nissan model, consistent with its global branding. Previous reports had suggested it would be sold as an Infiniti. The new GT-R was previewed last year in concept form as the GT-R PROTO (pictured). Traditionally, the Nissan GT-R has not previously been offered for sale in North America. The GT-R will debut in production form at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show, the company said today. It is scheduled to go on sale in Japan in Fall 2007, followed by the U.S. and Canada in Spring 2008. More details on the launch of the GT-R will be available at a later date.

GT-R’s U.S. Nameplate Announced

I got the following press release from Nissan/Infiniti yesterday:

GT-R’s U.S. Nameplate Announced

Since the unveiling of the GT-R PROTO at last October’s
Tokyo Motor Show, Nissan has continued development of the
legendary GT-R sports coupe. And while details about the
next generation GT-R have been few, one important piece of
information was made public today.

Mr. Carlos Ghosn, President and CEO of Nissan Motor Co.,
Ltd., kicked-off the New York International Auto Show with
the exciting revelation that the GT-R will be sold in the
U.S. as the Infiniti GT-R.

As part of his keynote address at the International Motor
Press Association Breakfast, Mr. Ghosn said that when he
unveiled the GT-R PROTO, Nissan had not yet decided whether
the GT-R would be sold as a Nissan or an Infiniti in the
United States.

Mr. Ghosn also expressed enthusiasm that the heart-pounding
GT-R will build on drivers’ passion for the Infiniti brand.

This communication is first in a series leading up to the
launch of the Infiniti GT-R. As part of an exclusive group,
you will be among the first to receive information and
special insights into the development of the Infiniti GT-R.

ok guys, now read each others posting carefully.......because if you look at it, you both posted the same email, and they both say the same thing. They both say that Mr. Ghosn said they have decided as of the NY International Auto Show that it would be sold under the Nissan badge, and that when they "first" unvieled the GT-R at the "Tokyo" auto show that they were as "yet" undecided. So what that email says now 3 times in this thread is that the Nissan GT-R will be sold in the US under the (drum roll please!) NISSAN badge. :smilie_th

Nissan Motor's President and CEO Carlos Ghosn announced today at the New York Auto Show that the new GT-R supercar will be sold in North America as a Nissan model, and not under the Infiniti brand as previously rumored.

The production version of the GT-R will debut at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2007, with its launch in the Japanese market scheduled for Fall 2007. The U.S. launch will follow in Spring 2008.

Thanks to Josh and Jason for the tip!
