Question re: US importing

Hey guys,

Just a curiosity question from north of the border.

Which States can you legally import a Skyline into?
I've seen a couple with NY plates and I've heard Cali and Florida.
Are they restricted to the R33 only or whatever Motorex brought in before they went tits up?

Motorex imported and legalized the entire range of R32-R34 vehicles. When they went away, import eligibility for all models was revoked except R33s from Jan 1996-June 1998.

Due to the manufacture date on the car, you'd have to achieve OBD-II compliance on the car, which is expensive and difficult. I have heard someone can do it, but no one really is.

There are no state restrictions on import, all of the laws referenced above are federal. Each state may have restrictions for state registration, such as inspections or emissions requirements, but importing is a federal set of rules and laws.

There is a good deal of information (and misinformation) on the topic, but NHTSA's website is very, very complete and provides just about all the information you might need, as well as can use to cross reference with 'internet noise' to see what's true and not.

some people don't get that the states have nothing to do with import laws, it usc and federal regs.

the whole thing with motorex just shows how ****ed up and currupt things are in the USA....

If that's the case then how is it that there's several R32's registered in the US?

The question originally was about import eligibility. The answer (although worded a bit oddly) was that the R33 is eligible for import, and the Motorex ones with documentation were legally imported.

The R32 cannot be legally imported at this time.

State registration does not imply federally legal or legally imported cars, it simply means that the state has registered the vehicle. There are plenty of non-legally imported cars with registrations, including some of the R32s you are talking about. These cars may include Motorex vehicles, registrations that list the car as assembled from parts, or registrations that say Nissan Skyline because the DMV was lax or they were lied to about the federally legal status of the car.
