Do you think the R35/V35 will ever make it to the US?

After reading so many rumors on the net, I'm not sure what to think anymore. What is your take on the subject? Do you think Nissan will make the move to bring the skyline GTR to the US? Will it have a v6 turbo platform or will it have a NA V8?

Well, we can ask our friends at Cosworth, can't we?

I am pretty sure Nissan would rather modify their existing V6 powerplant than create a whole new 8cyl motor for the GTR. Their whole line-up currently utilizes very few different motor options. Their only 8 cyl is in a pick-up. If they turboed the current v6, the high hp powerplant could be used under the hood of a few different Nissan and Infinity products. But this is all just guessing.

It's not that difficult to turn the 3.5L V6 into a 4.7L V8, though. And the latter would certainly burn cleaner.

I'm hoping that they don't turn it into a NA V8. It would kill the heritage of the car. Unless nissan made an NA version of the GTR that I don't know about......

WestSideBilly 01-06-2005 12:38 PM

If you *really* wanted to nitpick, then technically the heritage would be dead with a V6 TT... since every one was powered by a turbocharged RB-series I6.

boomn29 01-07-2005 09:57 AM

Is the US version supposed to be called the R35 or V35 is it? I hadn't heard that. If so, what's the reasoning, just the next number?

WestSideBilly 01-07-2005 10:31 AM

R35 is just a model sequence. The past models were all Nissan Skyline GT-R, with R32/R33/R34 distinguishing the differing generations. Much the same with Nissan Silvia (S13, S14, S15). The R35 would most likely be sold here as a Nissan (Infiniti?) GT-R - the Skyline name being dropped.

From what I understand the "R" refers to the RB series motor that was used in the previous gtr's (R32, 33, 34). The rumor going around is that Nissan will use their VQ series motor in the gtr which is the reason why the V is being used.

EDIT: Correction, the V is based on the chassis not the motor. Thanks for the correction Dave.

allegedly, "Infiniti GTR" will be offered worldwide; it will be a direct competitor with Porsche 911. at this level, then, the new GTR more than likely will be benchmarked peformance-wise similar to the new, limited edition, 2005 model GTR-34 Z-tune (which is probably why they re-issued this car, as a teaser to fill the gap):

http://www.drifting.com/forums/showt...689#post132689.

the VQ30 has been race-proven, in the JGTC version of R34 GTR, as a twin-turbo model. so it stands to reason that they dropped it into an actual GTR to 'test' it.

yet there are several quandaries: how much of all of this will make it to the production 2007 GTR? will it be the VQ30 or 35? will it be twin-turbo, a la GTR tradition, and will it be AWD as in the G35x? i am going to guess that, yes, it will be AWD, twin-t, just as the past GTRs have been -why would they not do this? why would they walk backwards? (i think they will surprise us, actually).

the only thing i feel that may, as in maybe, not make it to worldwide shores is HICAS, especially the US market. and i would not be surprised, given this new global business model for the GTR, that the US market receives the "lesser" GTR. somehow the american market nearly always gets the most watered-down imports. but i am sure the GTR will be awesome regardless. and i think it will not look like the current "spy shot" crap or concepts.

boomn29 02-10-2005 02:26 PM

I'd think it was hafta be AWD and TT. That's a must in my eyes. I'm still not sure what engine they'll use for us though.

Any updates on engine or price??

Hey guys, I know there has been alot of stuff written about the NEW GTR, saying how great it is, and tunable, and yada-yada-yada, but in my humble opinion, I still think the thing is ugly! I find that the new cars, both domestic and JDM all have a commonality to them, and that's either you love the look or totaly hate it. I don't like the new Nissan look. I like the older , classy look of the R32 and 33.
Just so you know, I do like the new powerplants offered though.
Cheers

bonzelite 03-02-2005 01:24 PM

yes. if even the mere g35x is AWD, then the GTR will undoubtedly be AWD as well, else it would not be a GTR. there are rumors as well that it will have HICAS (AWS).

i found this rambling discussion about it:

http://www.240sxforums.com/forums/sh...1&page=1&pp=25

as far as how it will look, well, that is anybody's guess. but i'm telling you it will be a facelifted, perhaps beefier looking, version of what we are already seeing today in the g35c/ GT350 skylines, as that is the chassis it will be based upon.

Canada East 03-04-2005 04:46 PM

I'll garuntee that! I don't know, but the last couple years, Nissan has come through with the motor and drivability, but they goofed in the assethetics! I still think the new modles are cluncky looking. They put me in mind of Ford and GM's, and who would want one of them?

JINX 03-06-2005 02:54 PM

Here here.
The 350 is heading twards the porshe organic look.
Think: Egg with wheels.

Err, not really. I dont know what you mean by 350z, as this is discussion about the next gtr.

Canada East 03-07-2005 04:36 PM

Just saying mate, that the cars of today, rarely have that "jun sey qua", that panash, the look that makes them stand out from the others. Hell, just today I was driving downtown and followed what I thought was a new Mustang, but it was a Toyota! All I'm saying is that if Nissan keeps going the way of all the others, we will have a generic GTR on our hands! Nothing like the R32/3/4's that for sure!

Well if it weren't for the 350z or G35, the next gtr may have not been a possibility.

Also I think if the next gtr does come out looking like a beefier G35, the car would look great. I'm also a diehard porsche fan too!! :smilie_th

Canada East 03-10-2005 04:49 AM

Shhhhh! You should never tell anyone who loves Skylines that you love another car. It's like telling your wife that you've got a girlfriend on the side. LOL!

boomn29 03-10-2005 12:19 PM

Anyone think the current G35 / 350z will get some newer technology passed down? Like AWD for example? There's already a G35x Sedan.

dave 03-11-2005 02:56 PM

boom, I do not reason that there will be "passed down" tech on the next gtr. it will all be new technology on the car.
spt, im a porsche fan too, its weird cause skylines and porsche's are like unofficial rivalries.

Canada East 03-12-2005 03:42 PM

Aww, common guys! I mean what's a porsche anyways but a tricked out VW! I used to own one in Germany, and I didn't think they were all that great. That's why I traded to BMW. Now that I'm back my quest is the Skyline!

I think maybe Dave and others misunderstood my question...

What I meant was that obviously the GT-R is getting new technology - that's a given. For those of us that are a bit poorer, I was wondering if the lower lines (Z, G35) might benefit from some of that new stuff. Kinda like getting 1/2 of the GT-R for like 1/3 of it's price ya know???

*Chris* 03-21-2007 08:38 PM

i just dont really care man. i dont really like it that much, i think the R34 was the hottest one they have come out with

bonzelite 03-22-2007 11:06 PM

i love it. it looks bad a$$. i want one.
